Background of the Study

Software automation has become a cornerstone for driving business efficiency in logistics, a sector critical to economic development. Automation involves the use of technology to perform repetitive tasks that were previously carried out by humans, thereby reducing errors, enhancing speed, and lowering costs (Gartner, 2024). Logistics firms, which manage the flow of goods from origin to destination, face increasing challenges such as inefficiencies in operations, rising labor costs, and the need for rapid response to customer demands. Software automation offers solutions by streamlining processes like inventory management, route optimization, and real-time tracking.

In Nigeria, the logistics industry is growing, driven by e-commerce expansion, urbanization, and improved transportation networks. However, firms in Nasarawa State lag in adopting automation, partly due to financial constraints and inadequate technical expertise (Adekunle & Bello, 2023). The integration of automation tools, such as warehouse management systems (WMS) and transport management systems (TMS), holds the potential to transform these firms by enhancing productivity, reducing operational errors, and improving service delivery. Despite the recognized benefits, the adoption rate remains low, necessitating a closer examination of its effects on business efficiency.

Statement of the Problem

Logistics firms in Nasarawa State struggle with inefficiencies that hinder their ability to compete in a rapidly evolving industry. Manual processes dominate critical areas such as inventory control, scheduling, and communication, resulting in delays, errors, and high operational costs. While software automation has proven successful in addressing these challenges globally, the extent to which it improves efficiency in local contexts like Nasarawa remains unclear (Oluwaseun et al., 2024). Furthermore, there is limited empirical data on the challenges firms face in implementing automation tools, such as cost barriers and lack of skilled personnel. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the impact of software automation on business efficiency in logistics firms in Nasarawa State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the level of adoption of software automation in logistics firms in Nasarawa State.

  2. To assess the effect of software automation on operational efficiency and cost reduction.

  3. To identify challenges faced by logistics firms in adopting and implementing software automation.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adoption of software automation in logistics firms in Nasarawa State?

  2. How does software automation influence operational efficiency and cost reduction?

  3. What are the challenges faced by logistics firms in adopting and implementing software automation?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between software automation adoption and operational efficiency in logistics firms.

  2. Software automation does not significantly reduce operational costs in logistics firms.

  3. The challenges of adopting software automation are not significant in logistics firms in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on logistics firms in Nasarawa State, examining their adoption and use of software automation. It covers areas such as inventory management, route optimization, and customer service. Limitations may include difficulty accessing sensitive operational data from firms and constraints in generalizing findings beyond the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Software Automation: The use of technology to automate repetitive business tasks, reducing human intervention.

  • Operational Efficiency: The ability to deliver services in the most cost-effective and timely manner.

  • Logistics Firms: Companies involved in the planning, implementation, and control of the movement of goods.
